This method is used to help remember a wide veriety of different things, from shopping lists, to presidents of the united states. It is a simple yet effective memory improvement system which is easily learned and can be used to full advantage by any one, genius or not.
The basis of this system is your mind's massive ability to visualize. The visual memory is often not tapped into, but it is very effective. For this memory improvement technique, you will need to think of a place you know very well, be it your home, work, school, something you can vividly picture in your mind's eye and comfortably walk around in with your mind, noticiing the different rooms and compartments. Got it? Ok. This is what we will call your memory palace, which is often reffered to as a 'locus'. Now, you will need to designate a path around your memory palace, which takes you through every room and compartment. This is important as you will be taking this route every time you try and recall what you are trying to remember.
Ok, now you've got your memory palace sorted out, the rest is simple. For this technique you will simply need to place the objects which you are trying to remember into each room or compartment. Place the objects in the order in which your designated path takes you through your memory palace. If you aren't specificly trying to memorize a group of objects, change what you are trying to remember into something that you can visualize and place into your memory palace. It often helps to exagerate everything a bit, for example if you wanted to remember to buy some tomatoes as part of your shopping list, you could place this tomato in your memory palace as a giant tomato, a tomato you need to step around to get to the next room or compartment. As I mentioned earlier. this system is not just limited to memorizing shopping lists, you can use this memory technique to remember anything that you can vividly imagine and place into a room in your memory palace, such as your daily schedule for example.
This method really does work, and the great thing is it's really simple. If your memory palace is not big enough, then it is often advantageous to sub-divide your rooms compartments into designated places to put objects. For example, if it's your house, your kitchen could be divided into the oven, the fridge, the cooking surface. But you must make sure that you modify your path to suit, so that you always check these sections every time you go through your memory palace.
As you can see, memory improvement is really simple. It doesn't take much effort to simply think your way around your house, and then imagine each item of your shopping list in each room for example. The method outlined in this article has been really benificial to me when I have used it and there is no reason why it cannot be for you.
